The bullet-point biography
I called this site workliveplay because I strive for balance. Work and Play are what you do to Live. It's important to be passionate about both, make time for both and let experiences from each inform the other.
2008
- Swing - August: Swing Out New Hampshire. Lindy Hop dance Camp.
- Travel - July: Australia.
- Travel - May: Vancouver (Canada).
- Swing - April: First time as a Swing DJ (Envy Lounge).
- Swing - April: Vinnie's Jump and Jive. (Middletown CT).
- Aikido - Jan 5 - Five years of Aikido training.
- Jan 5 - Engaged at the top of the Eiffel Tower!
2007
- Travel - December-January: France (Paris).
- Swing - November: Vinnie's Jump and Jive. (Middletown CT). Diamond Dance (Saratoga, NY).
- Swing - September: Diamond Dance (Saratoga, NY).
- Work - August 30: Invited Keynote about the impact of Facebook and other Social Network Sites at Rivier College, Nashua, NH.
- Work - July 25: Presented at HCII 2007, Beijing PR China.
- Swing - July 6: Went to my first swing dance in years (I'd done it a couple of times back in Oz many moons ago), knowing basically nothing but having a great time. Decided in short order that it must be fit into my life.
- Aikido - June 16 - Attended Faust Sensei's seminar at Aikido of Central New York (Syracuse, NY)
- Work - May 30: Finished collecting dissertation data, after a year and a month!
- Aikido - May 18-20 - Montreal seminar with Tamura Sensei and Yamada Sensei (Aikido De La Montagne)
- Aikido - Jan 5 - Five years of Aikido training.
- Travel - December-January: Sweden (Göteborg).
2006
- Travel - December-January: Sweden (Göteborg).
- Work - November 28: Received a University at Albany Dissertation Award, providing much needed funding for the videoconferencing project.
- November 20: The first car, having died a natural death, is replaced with the sporty 1996 Toyota Paseo. Thanks Brian!
- Aikido - December 2nd: Attended Faust Sensei's Seminar at Framingham Aikikai (Framingham, MA)
- Aikido - October 14th: Attended Smith Sensei's Seminar at Albany Aikido
- Aikido - September 23rd : Attended Faust Sensei's Seminar at Aikido of Central New York (Syracuse, NY)

- Work - April 13: Videoconferencing project data collection begins.

- Work - June 29: Wave Three Software agreed to provide licences for Session 3 videoconferencing software, allowing me to proceed with my dissertation as planned.
- Aikido - June 5 - Attended Frank Johnson Sensei's great seminar at Albany Aikido.
- Work - May: Attended the 2005 CAASI reunion at Rutgers, taught by Emanuel Schegloff, Gene Lerner, John Heritage, and Anita Pomerantz. Re-met and met many more wonderful CA people, including some aikidoka!
- Travel - May: USA (New Brunswick, NJ and New York, NY).
- Travel - May: Sweden (Göteborg).
- Aikido - April 30 - Passed my 2nd Kyu Aikido test. Another huge and great day of testing: 21 people! We had dojo students, RPI students, YMCA students, and students from Mike Sense's North Country dojo. My friend Nick, for whom I took ukemi, was awarded 'most improved'. Sensei came up with a cool new format, too, following each rank's tests with a couple of yudansha going through that rank's test to critique and show important details.
- Aikido - February 26 - Attended Faust Sensei's one day seminar at Yousuf Mehter Sensei's dojo Aikido of Central New York, Syracuse, NY. As always at Mehter Sensei's dojo, it was great fun. We were later given a CD full of video clips of the seminar, one of which now takes pride of place on the dojo homepage.

2004
- Travel - December-January: Sweden (Göteborg).
- Aikido - December 11-12 - Attended Faust Sensei's two day seminar at Clyde Takaguchi Sensei's dojo Capital Aikikai, Silver Spring, MD. Had an excellent time with Sensei, Brian, and Jim from the dojo, as well as Brian, Lisa, who we stayed with, and Matt. Takaguchi Sensei was super-generous and everyone at the dojo was friendly, serious, and had terrific spirit.

- Travel - August: USA (around VT, MA, NY).
- Aikido - August 1 - Attended NY Aikikai 40th Anniversary Summer Camp. Huge. Saw Tamura Sensei again, and also Shibata Sensei, who proved to have a great sense of humor.
- Aikido - June 19 - Passed my 3rd Kyu Aikido test. This was CDA's largest day of testing--20 tests comprising all Kyu ranks. The tests were outstanding, spirit excellent, and the smiles the largest I've seen.

- Aikido - Jan 5 - Two years of Aikido training.
2003
- Work - August: Attended the 2003 Conversation Analysis Advanced Summer Institute (CA ASI) at UCLA--an amazing two-week intensive training program in CA taught by Emanuel Schegloff, Gene Lerner, and John Heritage. Paul Denvir was my partner in crime. Met many wonderful CA people, learned a lot, and saw an incredible Japanese garden on the last day.
- Travel - August: USA (LA).
- Work - Summer: Developed "The Case for ASCUS" website advocating not-for-profit scholarly journal electronic publishing and indexing.
- Aikido - May - Attended the Montreal Aikido seminar--largest in the Northeast--and saw Tamura Sensei for the first time. He is simply astonishing.
- Travel - May: Canada (Montreal).
- Travel - April: USA (Bennington, Great Barrington).
- Aikido - April 26 - Passed my 4th Kyu Aikido test. It was an amazing day of testing--everyone did an extraordinary job.

2002
- NCA Conference paper with Anita Pomerantz is judged one of the top four in the LSI division.
- Travel - November: USA (New Orleans).

- Work - May 9 - I was one of several communication researchers quoted in "An E-Mail Affliction: The Long Goodbye in the New York Times' Circuits section. The others quoted were all rather big names, so I was extremely honored to be among them. Not sure how they found me...
- Work - April 30 - Started working as the Associate Director for Technical Development for the Communication Institute for Online Scholarship (CIOS).
- Aikido - April 20 - Passed my 5th Kyu Aikido test. Hurrah! Bought a bokken and T-shirt to celebrate.
- Work - (Spring): Working with Anita Pomerantz on medical interaction project.
- Work - (Spring): Started volunteering at The Ark one night a week, teaching web-development.
- Aikido - Feb: Bought my first Jo (white oak).
- Aikido - January 5 - Started training in Aikido again. Love it.
2001
- December 27 - I've now been in the US for one year.
- Hallowe'en - My parents loaned me the money to buy my first car, a six-cylinder (so long, environmentalism!).
- 2001 Work - (Fall): Did an ethnography of The Ark (an after school arts and technology program for the children of the Taylor project in Troy, NY) for Field Research Methods.
- Work - Associate Member of CIOS (working on the CIOS browser distribution project).
